Confessions of a…

Meat

I  have a confession to make.  I am a bulk buyer.  There is very little else that makes me as happy as coming home with 40 rolls of toilet paper or 24 tins of chopped tomatoes.  It’s a sad state of affairs when heading over to Costco to do my shopping makes me this happy.  In my defense I know I am saving money by buying in bulk- it gets rid of the mindless spur of the moment shopping which is how a lot of us fritter away our money.  Or is that just me?  I am also saving time not having to run to the shops to pick up things for dinner- I know what I have in the freezer and I can pop into the green grocer on the way to pick up Squidge from school for any fresh veg I might need.  Time saved is mega! I’d be out anyway to pick Squidge up and there’s no fighting traffic heading to the supermarket where I might end up w/ more in my trolley then I  walked in for.

Today for example we headed to Costco to buy meat as we were running low.  I picked up boneless skinless chicken thighs, chicken goujons,  aberdeen angus mince and pork tenderloin.  I now have enough meat for 30+  family meals and I’ve portioned out mini portions of mince and goujons for Squidge.

I use these mini portions to make really quick spaghetti bolognaise on nights when Squidge has after school activities.  In the time it takes to boil the water for the pasta I can chop, season and cook the mince sauce.  Start to finish I can have a home cooked meal for Squidge in under 15 minutes.  The best bit is she loves it.  Then factor in cost and all the goodness I put in there and I’m Mother of the Year!   In all honesty I’m not out to be a super mom- I try to have healthy meals for all of us but I do have a (bulk) bag of chicken nuggets in the freezer which we replenish about once every couple of months.  I am also very lucky that Squidge loves most foods so I can buy a (bulk) bag of frozen prawn and have a healthy veggie heavy meal for her in 5 minutes. When you work 2 jobs and your kid has loads of after school activities a meal of prawns, veg, pancetta and pesto pasta in 10 minutes is a win in anyone’s book!

I also have bulk buy fails- like the FIVE boxes of 500 count dishwasher tabs I have in my garage! I  have A LOT of laundry tabs too.  It’s always (for me) important to have a bit of a recon before heading to Costco and it’s a lesson learned after buying that 5th box of dishwasher tabs!  I didn’t do that this morning and as I stood in front of the toilet paper and kitchen towels I couldn’t remember which I needed- I knew I needed one of them… so I chose the toilet paper.  As you’ll have probably figured out I guessed wrong.  I am now the proud owner of 72 rolls of toilet paper and only 3 rolls of kitchen towels.

Please tell me I’m not the only bulk buyer out there! Wal thinks I’m sick and it’s a fine line between bulk buying and ending up on Hoarders!  What say you?? Do I need a bulk buying intervention?

Costco is the biggest thing I miss about living in Berkshire. It was our closest store and now it is over an hour away!

I don’t know what I’d do without a Costco- cry probably!

It’s when I bulk buy stuff and only part way into the stash family decide they no longer like that thing any more. Then it stops being a bargain and becomes a burden. My garage is full to the rafters of cat food at the minute!

I’m the opposite, I live right to the wire but when I send my other half out to the shops he comes home with 300 bananas, four loaves of break, ten pints of milk, enough loo roll to last the year lol
