Now that Squidge is a bit older we don’t do ‘play dates’ any more. She’s much too sophisticated don’t you know! No, now we call them parties or well, we don’t call them anything at all.
Over Christmas we hosted our annual Christmas cookie decorating party. 9 girls, 5 dozen sugar cookies, many many bags of coloured icing. The girls had a blast, it was the perfect play date, sshhhh don’t tell Squidge I called it that.
During the party the girls were thirsty and went through all the cold drinks I had. I had a quick think and remembered a hack I had read about a while ago. Quickly chilling drinks using salt. It’s all sciency and that’s what caught my attention.
It’s really very simple. Fill an bucket with ice and water (ration 1:1) and then add 2 large handfuls of salt, stir and add the bottle into the salty water. The bottle will be chilled in about 20 minutes.
Now the science behind this life hack. Salt reduces the freezing point of water and allows it to become colder without turning into ice, which in turn chills your drink more quickly.
For tween parties it’s all about pizza, cookies, posh fizzy juice and crisps. For the crisps I found that Walkers recently launched a fab new line of crisps- Walkers Tear ‘n’ Share they are new thicker cut crisps that come in an innovative bag that turns into a bowl. Perfect for sharing- a perfect life hack! They are available in 4 different flavours Cheddar Cheese & Onion, Sticky BBQ Ribs, Salt & Malt Vinegar and Lightly Salted. They also retail for £1.99 in most supermarkets, although we’ve picked up a few bags on offer for £1.
